About The Beer

Chimay is the most famous of the remarkable Trappist breweries and with good reason. The Belgian abbey began selling their beers to the public in the 19th century. To this day, their beers are still brewed under the careful supervision of monks who reside within the walls of Scourmont Abbey in Belgium and all proceeds from sales support the abbey and charitable work in the community. To say that their beers are extraordinarily influential and delicious would be an understatement. They are all classics of their style. Typical of Belgian breweries, all Chimay beers are brewed using traditional methods. They are unpasteurised, contain absolutely no chemical additives and are bottle conditioned.

Here’s the line-up:

1. Chimay Blue Belgian Dark Strong Ale 330ml Bottle

The Chimay Blue Cap, baptized "Grande Reserve", is a dark Trappist beer with a powerful aroma, the complex flavour of which improves across the years. It was first brewed as a Christmas beer by the monks of Scourmont Abbey in 1956. This authentic Belgian beer, whose tinge of fresh yeast is associated with a light rosy flowery touch, is particularly pleasant. Its aroma, perceived as one enjoys it, only accents the delightful sensations revealed by the aroma, all revealing a light but agreeable caramelized note. ABV: 9.0%

2. Chimay White Tripel 330ml Bottle

Chimay Tripel, with its typical golden colour, its slightly hazy appearance and its fine head is especially characterised by its aroma which results from an agreeable combination of fresh hops and yeast. It is quite reminiscent of wine with its aromatic caresses of citrus & floral herbs. Impressions include that of toasted bread characters & the fruity taste of grapes. The finish is elegant giving a smattering of bitter hops combined with the bitter herbal aromas of citrus zest & cloves. There is no acidity, but an after-bitterness which melts in the mouth. This top fermented Trappist beer, refermented in the bottle, is not pasteurised. Ingredients: Water, malted barley, wheat starch, sugar, hop extract and yeast. ABV: 8%

3. Chimay Rouge Dubbel 330ml Bottle

Chimay Red is noted for its coppery colour which makes it particularly attractive. Topped with a creamy head, it gives off a light, fruity apricot aroma produced by the fermentation. The taste perceived in the mouth is a balance confirming the fruity nuances noticed in the fragrance. Its taste, which imparts a silky sensation to the tongue, is made refreshing by a light touch of bitterness. To the palate, the taster perceives a pleasant astringency which complements the flavour qualities of this beer very harmoniously. This top fermented Trappist beer, refermented in the bottle, is not pasteurised. ABV: 7%

4. Chimay Doree Blonde 330ml Bottle

Brewed from very similar ingredients as the Première but paler and spiced with coriander. It was intended only to be consumed by the abbey monks or at the nearby inn Auberge de Poteaupré, which is associated with the abbey. The Dorée is now widely available to consumers and can is enjoyable as as a refreshing dessert beer, because it is lower in alcohol content than the rest of the Chimay family ales. ABV: 4.8%
