Step by Step Instructions: How to Make & Use a Drill Chill

First here is what you'll need:

  • Can clip holder

  • Scissors

  • 8mm drill bit

  • 8mm bolt, 2 washers and a nut

  • 2 spanners

  • Some ice, about a trays worth of ice will suffice

  • Some water

  • Container

  • Cordless drill

  • Scrap piece of wood

Using these items to make the drill chill following these steps.

1. Cut the 4 pack can holder down so that you only have one holder, trimming off any sharp edges.

2. Using a scrap piece of wood, drill an 8mm hole in the centre of the single can clip holder.

3. Place 1 washer on the bolt and then from the bottom side of the clip place the bolt through the can clip. Then slide the second washer and nut onto the bolt. Lightly tighten using the two spanners.

4. Place the drill chill attachment into the cordless drill and tighten the chuck. Set the drill to low speed.

5. In the container place the ice and some water. If you are at a bbq with an esky filled with ice this will work great as well.

6. Clip the beer can onto the end of the drill chill ensuring the beer is securely clipped in.

7. Place the can into the container of ice and start spinning on low for 2 minutes to get the beer ice cold.

8. After 2 minutes remove the beer from the ice and unclip it from the drill. The beer is ready to enjoy straight away.

How Does This Work?

Beer placed in ice will take about 15 - 20 minutes to chill down completely. By spinning the beer you are introducing convection and thereby increasing the rate at which heat is transfered between the can and the surrounding ice. If using a container with about a trays worth of ice you will likely notice the ice in the container becoming smaller during the 2 minutes of spinning which is the transfer of heat occuring.

Why Doesn't The Beer Explode When I Open It?

You might be thinking the can will explode as soon as you open it, but it won't. Because we are spinning the can and not shaking it you’re able to open the beer straight away and there will be minimal to no froth. Pour into your favourite beer glass and enjoy.
